In March 2023, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) adopted the voluntary ASTM F2057-23 as a mandatory safety standard to protect young children from injury and death from furniture tip-over incidents. Over 300 American children have died or been injured when clambering on dressers, armoires, wardrobes. In 2020, for example, Ikea agreed to pay $46 million to the parents of a two year old boy who died when a 32kg chest of drawers fell on him. Ikea had recalled the item a year earlier over safety concerns when three other children were killed.
