The success of the performance-based standards (PBS) trucks in South Africa’s forestry and other heavy freight industries is undeniable. However, nearly four years after the pilot study ended, the national transport department is still prevaricating despite numerous submissions, lobbying, and discussions at all government levels. “All hell will break loose if there are no PBS trucks on the roads”, Forestry SA’s director of operations Francois Oberholzer warned the 300 delegates attending Focus on Forestry.
