Nwabisa Mpompo’s journey from unemployment to establishing a business and becoming MTO’s silviculture contractor at Garcia Plantation has not been easy. It is a journey of overcoming self-doubt, seizing opportunities and gritty determination.

“Early this year, I tendered for MTO’s silviculture work at the Garcia, Jonkershoek, and Kruisfontein Plantations. I was awarded the Garcia contract for three years, and this time, I am the main silviculture contractor”, she explained.

The three-year enterprise development contract began on 10 June 2024. Nwabisa and her team of 18 are clearing and burning slash, spreading branches, spraying herbicides, pitting and planting pine seedlings and applying fertiliser. However, they first had to attend health and safety, first
aid and firefighting training. Nwabisa is grateful to MTO for the doors they are opening for her and the assistance she receives from her mentors, Sinoxolo “Sino” Sixaka and Henry Cunningham.
