The time is overdue for all Southern Africans to realise that the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) is a regional treasure of knowledge and expertise. Its work has far-reaching influence on private and public activities and decision-making, impacting present and future ecological, economic, cultural, and social sustainability.

The International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO) represents over 15,000 scientists. Four FABI scientists received awards at the IUFRO World Congress in June.

  • Prof Mike Wingfield: Honorary Membership of IUFRO, its highest honour.
  • Prof Brenda Wingfield: Scientific Achievement Award for her pivotal role in driving applied biotechnology in the forestry industry.
  • Dr Josephine Queffelec: Award for Exceptional Doctoral Research in Division 7 (Tree Health).
  • Ginna Granados, a FABI PhD candidate: Best Poster Award.
