Architecture and engineering postgrads and professionals are increasingly questioning their roles in designing and creating environmentally friendly “green” built environments rather than brick, cement and steel construction. They are considering the carbon lifecycles of their creations to counter greenhouse gases and other emissions.

Mass timber, cross-laminated timber (CLT) and other engineered timber solutions are acknowledged globally as ideal materials because buildings can be prefabricated, transported, rapidly assembled, and erected with low impact on the construction site. In South Africa, forestry and sawmill companies like York Timbers encourage the construction industry to adopt modular construction and mass timber.
